EU passenger car ICE phase-out now in place

The European Union (EU) Parliament has passed a historic vote in Strasbourg, declaring that the phase-out of internal combustion engine (ICE) passenger cars will be in effect by 2035. This decision will have a profound impact on the future of transportation and the environment.

About the new regulations

Under the new regulations, 2035 passenger cars' carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions must be 100% less than the permitted 2021 fleet average of 95g/km NEDC. Additionally, there will be a reduction of -55% by 2030, meaning that automakers will need to make significant changes to their production processes and vehicles to achieve these targets.

The new regulation is a significant step forward in the fight against climate change. Transportation accounts for a significant portion of global carbon emissions, and the move towards electric vehicles (EVs) is a critical component of reducing the world's carbon footprint. The EU's new regulations will help to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable future.

This new regulation will require automakers to invest heavily in research and development to meet the new standards. In addition to producing EVs, companies will need to implement new technologies to reduce emissions further, such as improving aerodynamics and lightweighting materials. These new standards will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the automotive industry, pushing them to innovate and create more sustainable products.

The benefits of this new regulation extend beyond the environment. The switch to electric vehicles will also help to reduce air pollution in urban areas, which is a significant health concern. Electric cars produce zero tailpipe emissions, meaning that they do not emit harmful pollutants into the air. This new regulation will improve the quality of life for people living in urban areas and help to reduce the negative impact of transportation on public health.

And, perhaps not entirely unbiased, we believe that a circular economy approach cannot be missing from a holistic solution.
